Tips For Beautiful Portraits | Staske Photography

Deciding what to wear in family portraits can be just as challenging as finding the perfect photographer. These are photos you are going to hang on your walls and cherish for years to come. It can seem overwhelming when considering what to wear but it doesn’t need to be.

Tips to help you pick out the perfect wardrobe for you and your family portraits.

  • More and more families are going for the casual look. SOLIDS work best if you are coordinating clothing choices with out of town relatives.
  • Wardrobe color choices that have proven to work exceptionally well:
  • All Denim or Denim with a White, Black or Navy Top
  • All Black or Black with a White or Red Top
  • Dark Khaki with a Burgundy or Navy Top
  • When making wardrobe choices look for clothing that will blend together allowing the faces to become the focal point of your portrait.
  • Suits and Dresses should be similar in tone (either all dark or all light, mixing dark and light distracts from the faces.)
  • Continuity in skirt or pants, with stocking and shoe color is recommended – remember the more monochromatic the wardrobe, the more the faces will pop.
  • Sleep! Make sure you get at least 2 nights of good sleep before your photo session so that you will look fresh and won’t have bags under your eyes. Beauty sleep is real….
  • Hair Care. Guys, let a new hair cut grow out for at least a week before your pictures, allowing time for any white tan lines to disappear. Also, take the time to get a close shave. Girls, if you plan on coloring your hair or getting a new style, also allow at least a week to get used to the style.
  • Clothes. Have your clothes and accessories ready the night before your shoot. Choose clothes that reflect your style and the changing seasons (summer – fall). Make sure they are clean and free of wrinkles. For each outfit, put your accessories in a zip lock bag and attach it to the hanger. Dress head to toe include hats, belts, scarves, layers..etc.
  • Make-up. Girls bring your make-up, hair spray and curling iron to do touch ups. Translucent Powered & Mineral Makeup is the Most Natural and will help with in the “T” zone. Make sure that your face make-up is blended into your neck. Also check to see if you have tan lines that will show with the different outfits you are going to wear. Bring chapstick or lip gloss to keep your lips moist.
  • Blemishes . Don’t worry about Blemishes, Retouching is included for all of our portraits. Don’t worry… your final prints will look great! Girls, don’t use too much make-up trying to hide blemishes. It will be easier for the Photographer to retouch your prints if you keep a more natural look.
  • Glasses. If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair of frames without lenses. Many Optometrists will allow you to borrow a pair of frames for your Senior pictures.
  • Smile. Paul will take your portrait with and without you smiling. If you wear braces and don’t like them, ask your photographer how much they charge to have them digitally removed. If you don’t like your smile, get in front of a mirror and practice it. Once you like a smile, close your eyes and smile, then open your eyes to see if it looks the way you want. Get used to how it feels to smile the way you think you look best.
  • Personality. Bring something that reflects your personality, talents or hobbies, such as musical instruments, sports equipment, awards, etc. We’re all about saying” Yes You Can”. Having your picture taken with what you enjoy will create unique portraits.
  • Creativity. We encourage all the creativity that you would like to use. Browse magazines, catalogs, websites…find styles and ideas that you love…then show/tell us. The Answer is Always Yes. We love your input.
  • Finishing touches. Guys, make sure your fingernails are nicely trimmed. Girls, pamper yourself with a manicure and pedicure the day before. Remove chipped nail polish & replace with a clear coat and use a bit of hand lotion. Most Important….Just Relax & Have Fun.
